Default SERPs questions - 10-06-2005 , 05:02 PM

Hi,

After 2 months of trying, I have finally managed to get some of my
pages listed in Google (29).

When I search in Yahoo I always coome on the first page and oftern in
the first 5 listed. In Google I am lucky to be in the first 10 pages!!

I have updated and checked my titles, keywords and descriptions. I am
in the process of updating my htms to make the names more detailled.

My questions are:

When I'm doing 302 redirects to the new page names, is there a limit to
the number I can do?
What is the maximum number of 301s my .htaccess can contain?

Is there anything else I can do to help my Gppgle SERps withough
jepordising my good Yahoo one?

Thanks, Louise

How about your header tags and internal link strategy? Inbound links
from authority sources?

Why are you doing these anyway please?

301s becuse I have changed some htm names and I don't want them oming
up as not found.

Inbound links I am working on. I have links from all my suppliers'
sites and I am working on getting more.

I have used Header tags on my pages. Saying that I have used more H2
than H1. Does google rank the heaings according to the heading numbers?
I have also put bold and italics, where appropriate - I am told that
this helps.

Thanks, Louise

I always try to use headers in proper order, Hi, H2 etc. I think you
really should only have one H1 but the amount of others I think will
depend on the layout and structure of your site. IMPO.

You are correct BB

ONE <h1> per page - and has to be the first <h*> tag to be read by
search engines.
You can have more than one of the other <h*> tags, and have to be in
the correct order.

This doesn't make much sense to me because with CSS you can make H1
tiny and H6 enormous. Unless Google test the font size of the headers
then this is a stupid rule IMHO.

You are correct BB
He's neither right nor wrong since no one knows for sure how many is
best. Though I generally advise what BB just said to clients.

Quote:

No one has run serious tests on headers (If they have it's not freely
available), so it's all guess work. I used to stick with one H1, but
have millions of pages with two H1s now and they do great.

One of my sites that has two H1s on most pages just broke the 19,000
visitors a day mark (two days in a row, with 18,000 the two days
prior).

No they don't have to be in the correct order. Lots of designs don't
allow for having headers in the correct order. It's not going to
destroy all your efforts just because a H4 is above a H3 in code or
you've jumped from H1 to H3 missing H2 along the way..

It is not stupid. Hx headers were defined to help prepare logically
structured documents. H1 is main title, H2 is subtitle to H1, H3 is
subtiltle to H2 and so on. Thus H2 should always look inferior to H1.
Whether it is smaller, or italicised, or H1 is bold - doesn't matter.

I would rather say that it is stupid to use CSS to modify this
default behavior - although it can be done, I can't see a single
reason for it. Document should retain its logical structure even
if stripped of all formatting information.

Best,
