Default SERPs and Domain TLDs - 04-10-2006 , 11:41 AM

Hi,

I have a site registered under the Irish TLD, .ie
I registered under this as the procedure for Irish TLDs is so
beuracratic(sic) that all the good names are still left!

When I search for my SERP on google.com on my own conenction (in Ireland),
I'm on page one. But when I use a US proxy, I'm not in the results at all. I
never knew Google change results depending on your location. But I'm
beginning to suspect that the .ie domain hampers my ability to have good
search engine positions when US and UK browsers search.

What do people think?
TIA, Georgie

I'm no expert on this but from my findings and from what I've read on
webmaster world etc, google do display search results based not only on
TLD but also the "geographic location" of your hosts IP address.

Which is why for my UK sites I make sure I have a "UK" IP address as
well as the .co.uk domain. It actually might be better for you to just
use a .com instead, annoying I know as you would think a .ie domain
would be better.

I wonder if google add weighting for .ie domains if someone adds a
keyword associated with Ireland... but I don't know. e.g. "bed and
breakfast ireland" etc.

Not sure... )

Well, my host is based in the US, so it might help me out that way. That's
the main target of my site.

I think it's still all topsy-turvy and it's too soon to worry
overmuch. Nothing has really settled down yet.

You could always get a .com and do a 301. After you get through
learning not to top-post, that is.

What's top-posting?

Replying on top of a message. If you reply, reply *under* the part you're
replying to and delete as much lines of the quoted message as possible. As
much as possible translates into being able to read the quoted message and
your reply after 3 months and still being able to follow the message. As
we read top down (since we write English) top-posting is extremely
annoying and gets you kill filed meaning people don't see any of your
messages anymore, and hence stop replying.

It's when you put your message at the top like this, a lot of NG users
don't like it as it interferes with the flow of a thread (harder to
follow).

Better to do what I'm doing now, put your comments below what you are
commenting on, deleting (snip, snip, snip :-) whatever isn't relevant.

IT's kind of funny that bill would moan about top posting when he
can't even snip a post correctly.

Learn to snip bill, THEN you can complain about someone top posting.
