Dave, now your turn to bitch about the commercial filter on Google.... |
Why would I bitch about a filter, I already have a very good idea what
has happened and it's not the commercial filter thingy which I doubt
exists.
If I'm right it's pretty bad for anyone who gets on the MT-Blacklist
here's a recent version of it-

Find yourself a handful of sites with highish PR and check for
backlinks, loads have no back links on this list who have reasonable
PR. You wouldn't find this if you picked a bunch of sites at random,
so there is something significant going on here.
Early days but it may be Google is using this or a similar list to
penalise sites for spamming, including mine.
I have no idea how I would of got on that list (I'd never spam, cough
:-)), but I'm on it, so looks like the current domain is in the
process of being penalised since it's lost all it's backlinks and it's
struggling on www2 and 3. Also there hasn't been an updated listing
for the site for quite sometime, even though googlebot is still
visiting.
I wouldn't be worried about the www2 changes since I've seen the exact
thing happen a few times, but the back links and the lack of fresh
listings is something new. Right now on www2 the SERPs related to the
home page (index.html) are all gone, whilst those for content pages
seem to be holding (mostly). I've had this happen a few times on www2
and once on www and then a few days later for the original SERP to
return. It's always happened at the time of Google doing big changes,
as if the home page wasn't included for the beginning and then it was.
If this transfers to www permanently (currently no major changes on
www) then looking at a loss of at least 2000 visitors a day (easy
come, easy go).
If Google is doing this, this is a shift in Googles approach to spam,
until now it's been commonly believed that Google will not penalise a
site if it's linked to from a bad domain or anywhere else. The reason
for this thinking was it leaves it open to abuse by competitors
posting your links to blogs etc... and getting them banned for
spamming.
I'm not convinced this is the case yet as it's generally googles way,
time will tell.
Fortunately I have a plan for just this eventuality and so though
there will be a short term decrease in traffic (possibly 90% if it's a
full ban), long term everything will be back on track.
Can't wait to see what happens next.
BTW still think Google is the best search engine available today and
it's SERPs are generally relevant. The Lingerie SERPs on www2 are as
relevant as ever, so I have no complaints.
Got to get back to my update that's taking forever!
