Search engine rankings

Hi

A client has asked me to get their site some good search engine rankings.
Paid solutions are also included. My question is; what are my chances of
succeeding in getting *any* ranking at all (paid or unpaid) given that the
whole world and his wife are after the same rankings? What should be my
response to the client and should I make any promises?

Two cents worth about the promise...

"Good" rankings is a pretty relative term. Odds are that with a bit of
effort you can improve their current rankings... you can answer this better
than we can.

BUT- I would go ahead and promise improvement rather than "good." If you you
don't show at least a little confidence, you won't get the gig...
