Default Search Engine Ranking Question - 10-10-2003 , 03:52 PM

I am the webmaster of a corporation, we hired a Search Engine Optimization
(SEO) company to do search engine submission for us. Recently I received a
report (I think it is generated by a software called "Web Position Gold")
and in the report it says our company URL ranks #2 in Google on specific
keywords.

The report was generated 2 days ago. So I went in Google and typed in the
exact keywords and I found that our position was actually listed on Page7
which is Position #75!!!!!!!!!!!! That's bullshit.

So asked the SEO company about it and the guy replied, "The report is
accurate when it is created. The search engines are always changing,
therefore the rankings may be different from week to week. "

Do you agree with his explanation? I mean it sounds really scary to me if
the position dropped from #2 to #75 in just 2 days!!!!!!!!!! It seems like
we are paying these guys big buck and don't seem to get good results. Is
there any good Search Engine Optimization company in US/Canada you guys
recommended? Please show me some proof of their work if possible. Thanks.

Have a look at:
http://www.google.com/webmasters/guidelines.html

Google does not recommend "Web Position Gold" as it violates their
terms of service though I am not sure what the penalty is...

Yes. Bull.

We wanted to be high up under the phrase or combo of two popular search
terms in our business category which return over 280,000 results.

Unlimited Dialup Access

Here we're #4

And..
Low Cost Unlimited Dialup Access

d+dialup+access&btnG=Google+Search
Here we're #2

Cost. Nothing.

We're now tweaking our Web Hosting stuff..then DSL.

Point is. Why pay someone to use Web Position Gold as a professional SEO
when you can simply learn on your own, do it yourself
and usually get better results.

I am really sorry to hear your story, but anecdotes from other members of
this group suggest you are not alone.

I have checked some of my pages daily and if in a position like 75th then
they move about a few positions every day as other pages come and go. If
the page is in the top 10 positions then movements of 1 step might occur but
the same position every day is the normal rule. This assumes your page is
stable and has not been edited in the previous two months or more people are
linking to it. There are also occasional temporary large page position
jumps perhaps lasting a few hours. I have even seen a page listed twice
over for a period of less than an hour. I suggest you repeat your Google
test every day and write down the keywords used, the date/time and result
positions. You may be back at #2 by now if the #75 was a brief anomaly.

What you need to address is what keywords are being used. You need to
imagine what your wanted customers are typing into Google. Ask the
customers, ask your staff, do brainstorming, check out the customer
language, dialect, colloquialisms and spelling exactly. There is an
Overture SEO aid that can help (or mislead) with this, but it is your
experience with your customers that is king.

Tell me your site name and I will do what I can to help you out.
Best regards, Eric eric (AT) satsig (DOT) net

I would approach with caution. You do get positions changing, although from
no2 to 75 seems like quite a big jump.

My guess would be that they used the search term in quotes. In other words,
they searched for the EXACT term.

If you searched without putting quote marks around the keywords, then you
could easily go from 2 to 75.

Somebody relying on Web Position Gold is NOT a professional SEO. What they
are being paid for is something entirely different, and is unlikely to be
described in their list of services.

If you have the staff to do it yourself then that IS the best solution. A
lot of what is required is best done by somebody who has knowledge of the
business. However it may still be worth having a good SEO do a consultancy
to point your staff in the right direction. Not necessary, but with the
right person it might save time.

If you don't have the staff time spare then it's better to get a
legitimate SEO specialist to do the work for you. Finding one is not that
easy however, the good ones are in demand.

I spent three years learning to do it for myself, and I know there are
people on this group who know one hell of a lot more than I do. Given the
budget I'd always at least hire in a consultancy, even though in some
aspects of SEO work I'm extremely knowledgeable (i18n and multilingual
sites).

In the long term it's best to do the work in house if you can. In the
short term it may be worth getting a head start by buying the skills in,
and not every company is in a position to do their own SEO effectively.

i18n

What does that mean?

Internationalisation. Broadening the web to cater for the whole world.
There is also l10n, which is localisation; making websites localised. They
are both pretty intertwined and a large and complex area, but really it
refers to (in its most basic form) making websites in different languages
etc.
Thanks Dylan. Is that why they use a funny symbol, so that it appears the
same in any language?

Whatever happened to Esperanto?!!

"i" is the first and "n" the last letter of "internationalization". The
number 18 indicates the number of letters between "i" and "n".
