Default Search Engine Question - 10-09-2005 , 11:37 AM

"Google" is the most often used search engine. Does this indicate that other
"general" search engines are inferior? Will other search engines provide me
with information that Google will not? I downloaded a search engine called
"Copernic" which incorporates a multitude of other search engines.
Copernic's concept is interesting but overwhelming. Should one choose a
search engine that one is comfortable with & ignore all the others?

Not at all.
As long as you rank well with the big 3 - google / yahoo / msn, then
you need not really worry about the smaller ones as they get their
feeds from them.

To a point, may be.
You can rank well in yahoo and msn, but not at all in google.
So with that in mind, you could have a web site that "googlers" will
not see.

I have never heard anyone download a search engine before.
Copernic is a desktop search tool, which is not the same as a search
engine as such.

I cannot comment on that as I have never used it, nor have the need to
use it.

If I were you, just concentrate on the big 3, unless you have a niche
market, and there is a search engine made for that market.

No, you should understand what they do and a little of how they do it.
You can use normal English queries with Brainbox and Ask Jeeves, for
example. Vivisimo uses cluster technology and will give different
results as a consequence. Teoma will give results that indicate
largely how well a site is linked to by others of the genre. Copernic
is a meta engine which means it combines results from different
engines.

There well may be, but he said he downloaded it.
3 search engines are enough, and if I rank high in them (I do for most
of my keywords) then I don't need another fly-by-night one.

If in 20 years time that Copernic catches on, I may think about it.
