Default SEO - Hyphens in Domain Name - 01-17-2005 , 08:53 AM

I am planning on acquiring some domains that contain keywords for the
industry I am in. Most of the logical choices are already taken, but I can
get domains that contain the words I want if I include double hypens in the
domain. I'm curious if search engines will not like this for some reason.
It seems that using single hyphens in a domain name works fine. Will double
hyphens work just as well?

Thanks.

These are all the same to Google:

[ "guy macon" "engineer resume" ]
http://www.google.com/search?q=%22gu...neer+resume%22
Results 1 - 10 of about 66 for "guy macon" "engineer resume".

[ "guy-macon" "engineer-resume" ]
http://www.google.com/search?q=%22gu...neer-resume%22
Results 1 - 10 of about 66 for "guy macon" "engineer resume".

[ "guy--macon" "engineer--resume" ]
http://www.google.com/search?q=%22gu...eer--resume%22
Results 1 - 10 of about 66 for "guy macon" "engineer resume".

[ "guy---macon" "engineer---resume" ]
http://www.google.com/search?q=%22gu...er---resume%22
Results 1 - 10 of about 66 for "guy macon" "engineer resume".

[ guy--macon engineer--resume ]
http://www.google.com/search?q=guy--...gineer--resume
Results 1 - 10 of about 66 for "guy macon" "engineer resume".

This one is different:

[ guy macon engineer resume ]
http://www.google.com/search?q=guy+m...ngineer+resume
Results 1 - 10 of about 912 for guy macon engineer resume.

The problem is that people are far less likely to type
in your domain name if it contains a double hyphen.

Can you get a .us or .biz or some such? Search engines
don't care and humans are less likely to type in the wrong
domain.

register 2, one you promote online (hyphenated), one you promote via
business cards, brochures etc thats easy to remember, it can even be funny
or quippy, just as long as its memorable - do you remember when in the UK
"the sun" newspaper registered "currentbun.com" ?

Shouldn't make much difference to search engines, but consider passing
on your URL verbally.

"Its double-u double-u double-u dot keyword hyphen hyphen.."
"Wait, what's that?"
"Hyphen. Two of them."
"Which is the hyphen? Is that like the quote thing?"

Never underestimate the general public.

Shouldn't be too bad if all your marketing is online, but radio ads
would be impossible to do well.
