Default SEO Advice needed, happy to pay for results - 08-18-2004 , 08:41 AM

Hi

I have a long-established site (http://www.lbehelpdesk.com/) and I need to
improve its ranking on Google.

Specifically for the phrase "help desk software". Currently the site ranks
68 in the results. Current pagerank of the site is 3 and
link:http://www.lbehelpdesk.com/ shows about 161 incoming links.

This site has been "optimized" in the past by both myself and a marketing
company.

Any advice would be appreciated. I would be happy to pay a fee based (at
least partly) on results if anyone wants to take on the challenge. If so,
please contact me off-list (email : seo AT LbeHelpdesk DOT COM)

Thanks in advance.

You need inbound links. You know to do "help desk software"+"add url"
and like that, no?

Try putting helpdesk software from lbe into Google.
Your site is listed #1, but the next 50 or so (of which only the first 2 are
visible - click on the "More results from...) appear to be copies of your
pages on another url.
Best regards, Eric.

I don't see that. First result is from http://www.lbehelpdesk.com/ The
next is from my secure server, https://www2.securesiteserver.co.uk/
lbehelpdesk/ (whh just points to the same website) , so is the third
result. Beneath the third result is a " More results from
https://www2.securesiteserver.co.uk " which shows all the other pages from
that site. 4th esult is from www.downloadthat.com etc. etc.

Not sure what the significance of your comment was.

John

You know what you have on your server(s). I would just caution against
having the same content in two places simultaneously or having the same
content possibly indexed twice using different url names. There is scope
for confusion and risk of penalty for duplicate content. There are server
redirections possible, use of robots.txt, .htaccess etc but correct
implementation of all this to avoid search engine confusion is beyond me.
Others can advise better. Best regards, Eric.

Tardy reply to yours - but hope you'll pick it up again Bill.

Correct me if I'm wrong - but isn't it:
(in Google) link: <site>

the same? - or better? way to go to determine linkbacks to one's site?

I spell the site all four ways, BTW:
http://<site>
http://www.<site>
<site>
www.<site>

Comments Bill? anyone?

That isn't what we're trying to do. We aren't trying to establish who
already links to you and even if we were Google seem currently to
think it's smart not to give us consistent answers to that query.
Entering "help desk software"+"add url" should lead you to sites,
presumably directory sites, looking for sites in similar categories to
add their url. So you can submit your site there and hopefully you'll
get a link back to your site. But you won't be able to tell that by
querying Google as they're being coy with the results. But if you have
loads of good quality inbound links then that should eventually be
reflected in your Google ranking. I stress the "eventually", no
overnight successes here.
