Default reporting "cheats" to google. - 07-12-2003 , 10:41 PM

Would it ever be appropriate (or possible) for one to report a site to
google if one thought that it was breaking google's "rules" of SEO?

e.g. if a site set up multiple domain names pointing to the same website and
these multiple domains took up several of the top spots on the search
results page.

just wondering

Whether the situation you describe warants action by Google, I don't know -
but the place to report it is:

Mark,

I see you issue, but, is this deliberate malpractice?

I haven't obviously checked things out as much as you (what domains
etc), but some people collect stamps.. some antiques.. some
paintings.. maybe someone likes to collect domain names too.

Still, I don't know for sure..... either way, I can't stand a grass

Here! Here!
Its enough to have to compete with big companies paying thousands to take
top positions without
having the little guys grass on their own kind.

I think it is totally appropriate to report it. I don't think Google pays
much attention to the submitted reports, though.

People who complain about you being a "grass" might be benefiting from the
malpractice themselves.

incompetance and ignorance is not justifiable practice

works perfectly when all players have the power and resources to
seek/fulfill their own justice.

lots of money can buy you the top slots for sure and if you spend it wisely
you'll stay there.

pay attention at the back - I don't recall seeing this described as a little
guys fight.

the only time I have ever had cause to enquire on a similar issue was the
typical david/goliath scenario. goliath in this instance being the baddy
complete with black hat, shades, chunky jewelry, blacked-out Mercedes and
dodgy cigars to complement the se/spamming which those with good enough
memories will recall was a particulrly nasty piece of work - well thought
out and expensive too, no doubt - but nonetheless obnoxious and deceitful.

the same amount of effort used to improve the target site would have been a
far more useful investement, but then a seo doesn't always have the brief to
alter content for sites that have been 'designed' by marketing gurus. if
you're any good at seo you'll already know you can't practice in isolation -
content is god. clients that insist (even after education) otherwise should
be left to rot in their own bile. SEOs that think they know otherwise
should be outcast. do you really want to do business with cheats and liars?
what is your company rep worth to you?

If the domains are pointing to the exact same files then google
doesn't have a problem with it.

But if you did see something that looks like it's against google's
terms of service, then reporting it isn't a bad thing.
Reporting spam helps make google a better place in the long run.
For example, I won't even think about doing something intentionally
that could be considered spam because I'm afraid one of my competitors
will report me and google will ban me. I'm sure this keeps a lot of
people from using spamming tactics. The end result is more relevant
search results.

I personally wouldn't report anyone unless the tactics used were
blantantly spam. Because there are situations where people do things
that can be considered spam, but spam really wasn't their intention.
And I'd hate to have a hand in getting someone banned who didn't
deserve it.

Anyways, the call is yours. Just don't become a Charles Bronson and
go on a viligante crusade against search engine spam.

Hmm I'd have thought this was a good description of worldwide business.
