Default Reciprocal links question - 10-23-2006 , 02:21 PM

I frequently get requests for reciprocal links - I link to their site, they
link to mine.

Usually, these sites have a separate page for links, instead of having them
on a main page, as I do.

Question: does Google downgrade links on "link pages" of otherwise ok
websites, or is it counted as less than if occurring on a main page?

Thanks

These are worthless spammers using some bullshit software to beg for
links. They do not deserve any time spent on them other than pressing
DELETE key.

Not the ones I've been getting. They have regular websites with at least
some information.

My problem is that I think these separate pages, solely for links, are
probably recognized and downgraded by google for ranking.

True?

Right, and then they buy software for begging reciprocal links.

They are worthless, at best.

The program I was referring to is called LinkMachine.

Some of the best links I got in the early days were as a result
of contacting webmasters of related sites and seeing if they
were interested in exchanging links.
To say link requests are "worthless at best" is ridiculous.
OK, so there is a lot more automated rubbish now, but it is
usually pretty easy to spot genuine link exchange requests.

In answer to the OP:
Be selective, if they are quality related sites a link on their
links page is fine, just be sure to give it a once over to see
where other links go from the page, and keep an eye on it.

I agree with TJ and to think differently well would be an Ignoramus.:-)

Many folk would tell you that a link from a piece of text is worth
more than a link from an obvious links page.

Our links page appears not to have been penalised, however we have real
links to real people with real businesses.

I often wonder why there are so many spam sites. They must take time
and money to maintain, and are clearly useless for anything; This site
http://www.exotictravel dot us wanted to link to us, however I can't
work out what the site is for.

Does it have less PR than the other pages though? I know I could mosey
over and see for myself, but I'm making a point here. If it does, that
isn't a penalty, but many would interpret it as such.

Selling ad space to the tourist industry, I imagine.
