Default What is going on with sites and Google???? - 06-29-2004 , 06:28 PM

Okay, so this is now getting weird. After my post last week regarding a certain
SEO company and how my site got dumped by Google a week ago today, I started
researching the company (yes, should have done it before I hired them).
What I found on different forums made my skin crawl. This company (traffic
power) seems to be generally regarded as the scum of the internet with their
crappy tactics. Forums are filled with people who, like me, found themselves
out of the Google loop.

So, on Friday, after 3 days of not being in the index, I took the suggestion of
at least 20 people, removed every bit of code that had been used to "optimize"
my site, and emailed google explaining the situation. I know of at least 10
other sites that did the same thing.

Saturday morning, I'm back up, PR is back to 5. BUT....whereas all my good
pages had returned to their original positions, the spammy bad pages were still
on Google as well. Of course if you clicked the link, since I'd deleted them
off my server, you got a 404 page.

I was told to expect my site to go down again as this was not a good sign, just
an indication that G was still shuffling things around.

I was good all weekend until yesterday mid afternoon when I went down again. By
7:00 last night, I was back up. But this time, ALL the spam pages were gone.
So that's good right?

Well, as of an hour ago, I'm back out of the loop. Nowhere to be found.

My question is this: While I have removed all spam pages that my &*$%#%$# SEO
company gave me and will not put them back in, I am starting to wonder how much
of this was due to them or how much due to something else going on. The SEO
forums are vitriolic in their loathing for Traffic Power (as I am now) but still
I'm wondering what the hell is happening here?

Anyone?

THanks again for any input,
Mike

Not that I'm the smartest wolf in the pack here but what may be going on is
that you are getting results back from different servers. Google holds it's
information on about 10 servers and the results will bounce until they are
all sync up. So all may not be as bad as it seems. It might just be you
are seeing results from servers that are not updated....Things may still be
"shuffling" around still.

If I hadn't been involved with this seo company I might agree. However from
what I've heard this has happened to a large number of their clients. A quick
search online for traffic-power will lead you to a number of sites that talk
about them. There's even a pending class action suit.
And having been online for over 5 years, having had a PR5 for longer than I can
remember, having been rated #1 out of 600,000 for a very competitive search, I
just don't think it's Google shuffling. If it is, they are costing people their
livelihood by their shuffling.
Time will tell.

Mike

That would of been my answer as well.

From the sounds of it google has given you a break this time and in a
week or so everything will be back on track.

Be more careful in who you use for SEO in future!

Or at least sound out SEO techniques here as plenty of the regulars
can spot risky SEO techniques and give you a risk assessment.

You should do a 302 (permanent) redirect from all of the spammy page's
urls. This will prevent the 404 errors & signal to the search engines
to clean out the spammy pages:

Thanks Bob. However while I'm not a pro, a 302 is NOT a permanent redirect. A
301 *is*.

I argued with a sales rep on the phone about their unethical tactics and how
they violated Google's tos. He put his manager on the phone who (of course)
defended their tactics saying that there was nothing wrong with them. I
pointed out Google's tos and read parts of it to him and he still said they
complied with their tos. He eventually got sick of arguing with me and ended
the call. They're just a bunch of scammers. Their tactics work for some of
the pages they did work for until they get caught.

Well, after trusting this bastards, looking at their references and basically
not doing my homework, we have been in and out of the Google database for a
week. As of yesterday, we are out again. We have removed ALL links and spammy
content. Does anyone know how long it might take before we are back inGoogles
graces? I took Googleguys suggestion on webmasterworld and emailed google but
this sucks...business is down about 70%.

I would allow the 404 errors since those pages are deleted, not moved.
If you put up a redirect (301, 302) you are saying the pages have
moved and any benefit of links should be passed to the new pages.

What happens if the penalty is also transferred!!

If there are a lot of pages a custom 404 would make sense so in the
short term anyone coming to your site for those links still get to
your site.
