I heard somebody say most of the 'SEO theories' are a 'big
hoax'.

Comments?
Most: yes. Some, based on sound reasoning, research, and experiments
however are maybe a bit off here and there, but come close enough to the
real thing to be very useful.

We are talking about SEO right? The goal of SEO is to achieve high
rankings in search engine results.

Thank you.

Do you think that's a worthwhile goal?
It is if you want to get traffic to your site. I have seen the affect of
a site moving rougly 60 places down the results in Google for a
particular set of phrases, and the incoming traffic from Google pretty
much dry up.

Yes of course... such as producing useful and informative content but
the two (SEO and a great website) are not mutually exclusive.

What are the motivations of creating a website?

Yes, such as useful inbound links from other sites, and from other forms
of marketing. But a high ranking in search engines for useful key
phrases is an excellent way of driving traffic to your site, if it is
your intention to have a lot of traffic coming to your site. It can
also be an extremely cost effective way of getting traffic to a site.

SEO = get a higher ranking, but then the goal of marketing your website,
of which SEO is part, is to get more conversions. That could be selling
more widgets through your site, or selling more of your services,
whether off-line or on, or getting your information to the maximum
audience. There's little point doing SEO if you don't care how many
people go to your website, and how they find it.
