Minor flaw in your logic. Google is based around link popularity and
so the argument if a SEO can get their site to number 1 for the above
SERP they must be good at SEO isn't necessarily true, it may be they
are very good (or lucky) at link popularity (which is a very important
part of SEO) but rubbish at the rest.

Then you have to look at where they get their links from, will they be
able to do the same for a clients site and if not what will that mean
for a clients site?

You'll find those at the top of the SEO related SERPs tend to be there
because they get their clients to link to their SEO site. Not
something I'd do (discussed here previously, so won't go into it
again), but will they also do this for a clients site? Will they get
all their other clients to link to you? Highly unlikely and sounds a
bit like a link farm!

So if a SEO site gets it's SERPs due to using it's clients as a link
source they are not going to be able to do the same for your site.

So when looking for a potential SEO via SEO SERPs try to weed out
those that use their clients sites for links. Otherwise it's not the
worst way to find a SEO consultant.

BTW my NTL page at
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/ooar123.../seo-help.html
is number 2 in UK Google for the search SEO. It has less than 300
links to it with a lot the search directory type (copy Google type
search results that have little PR like
ebusinesshelpcenter.com/11/help-seo.php) so not a great number of
links. Another page from the same site is in the top 10 for Search
Engine Optimization as well in UK Google, that one has around 500
links to it. Oh and no client sites linking to them :-)

The answer to your question is anyone can do it - but do you have the time
to learn all there is to know and to undertake the work?
Very true.

I've recently started work on something that will give my long term
clients thousands of new and very relevant pages to their sites for
free. All I do day in day out is work on ways to gain traffic from
search engines for myself and clients, can you afford to do the same!

That's interesting, Dave, I'll have a read of that. I notice the way
to take advantage of Google is that it still loves lists. I got mine
off the ground like that, then backed off but by then I'd got enough
solid content up to not have to worry about being penalised. I endure.
Looking at what you have there, I needn't have worried. I'll put
something similar on my 'to do' list.
which currently means in about a thouisand years I'll get around to it
- so much to do with the this and the the that and the oi and the
vey...kvetch...
