That is why I have left the links to "friends" as they are, but applied
the nofollow to links to larger/commercial sites or even sites that I
regard/mention as "dubious"
except maybe for comments/forums nofollow is completely dumb, if the
link merits a nofollow the drop it completely.

That's a good use for rel="nofollow" there are plenty of sites that
are trashing another site and in doing so helping them out in the
search engines!!

If you don't feel your link is a vote for that site rel="nofollow" it.
