What counts as link - again

Hi All,

I am not sure -- perhaps I have seen this information in a few last days
but I have a black hole under my skull at the moment... For the link to be
indexed and to count as a link, does it have to be in <a href=""> tag, or
is it enough if a correct URI is mentioned in the text?

If you want a link to be noted by search engines do a standard <a href="">
tag to the relevent target url. Indexing links and counting links is not
what search engines are for, so don't be suprised to find they don't give
out compete link information.

If you don't want Google to follow a link, use rel="nofollow". This is
useful if you want to link to an interesting page on a site that
incorporates a link farm and you don't want reverse penalisation to your own
site for appearing to participate in their link scheme. The same applies if
the target site is greyed out or is PR=0 on the Google toobar. Only link to
pages on reputable sites and check from time to time that the nature of the
pages and the sites have not changed.

If you just mention a url (but not make it an active link) the search
engines still read the name but it is up to them how they interpret this
information. It suggests some association but of lower intensity than an
active link.
