Hi all.

From my web logs I frequently see links from certain rather busy and
completely site related message board/forums presumable from links
posted by happy customers within forum discussions etc.

Would I be right in thinking that by simply setting up a reciprocal link
to said web site the weight of the link(s) would become more significant?

One way inbound links help your site. So, of they (the forums) are
cached then it will help you.

Also, many forums are not cached by bots, so you will in effect giving
them a one way link.

Follow-Up.

On a side note, if one was to do a slightly underhand method of linking
back, for example, having ones links page in a robots.txt "no-follow"
(or whatever it is) directory, to the casual reciprocal linker they
would be happy in so much as their link is reciprocated and clickable,
but to the S.E. it would see all in-bound links as 1 way links and as
such, give nothing away?

Not that I am contemplating such actions, but it does seem a simple way
to increase theoretical 1 way links.

No problem.
I get many links from forums, and all I get is extra traffic and no PR
:/

The rel="nofollow" only prevents PR from passing.
I have a few links on my sites that use rel. But this is because the
page my link I was on, is no longer cached. This could be because of
google decaching pages and then later being cached again, or it could
mean that the webmaster has stopped it from being cached. If it goes
on for too long, then the link will be removed.

It is a bad idea to have your links pages prevented from being cached,
no matter how it is done.

People also check robots.txt so no point trying there either.

That's being done all the time to improve "link popularity". Although it is
practically of no value to the Internet visitor. I see "professional SEO"
companies doing it to pump up their PR's. They get themselves 5 or 6 high PR
forum postings pointing to their web sites and then call themselves experts
in SEO. The crazy part is that their web sites position better in the
results pages and the average joe business owner is thoroughly impressed. Go
figure.

How would this be done in the robots.txt file? Example tag please?

You would use the robots.txt to ignore the folder or page you have the
links on. But I do advise against doing such things, esp if you have
existing exchanges.
