- Easy install
- Does not depend on an external web server that will invariable only index
half your pages
- Fast searching
- No advertising served up with the search results
- Is compatible with servers. (e.g. ASP or PHP scripts)
- Supports the document types that you have on your intranet, (e.g. PDF and
WORD).
- Wildcard searching ("zo*" and "zo?m" will find "zoom", etc.). new!
- Results are sorted in order of a relevance.
- Highlight matched words in search results
- Configurable number of results shown per page (eg: 10 results per page, etc.)
- Matching by ANY search terms, or ALL search terms.
- Support for ANSI accented foreign language characters. Eg. Á, ç, è, etc.
- Support for HTML character entities and numeric entities. Eg. &#accute;
á

It just so happens the we have written search engine software for intranets
that can do all this. Details are here,

That's a good list. I would these requirements, as well:
- can spider both Web-based and fileserver-based content
- indexes common office formats (Word, PDF, etc.) in addition to HTML
- can present text summaries of binary files and remote content, saving
the clickthrough
- provides single interface to silo'd information
- provides contextual navigation, in addition to keyword search
- lets you organize documents into arbitrary collections, for easy filtering
- customizable UI for "look and feel" integration
