Also regards terminology, why do SEOs use the word 'spam'? In general
useage spam = unsolicited email, from the Monty python sketch where spam
is served with every meal (ie. you always get junk-mail with the mail
you want).

Spamming to SEOs seems to mean anything that might be considered
'black-hat' (Keyword stuffing, redirects, cloaking etc.) , but to me
these seem to have no logical connection with the common usage of 'spam'
or it's etymology.

Tradition.

any idea why that tradition started?
Nah.

Hmmm... BL is Back Links, I always felt that I stands for Incoming,
but then Incoming Back Link sounds like tautology.

Not really, look up spam. Spam is in short repetitive stuff that annoys.

What I read some time ago, on IRC. Someone (IIRC) was sending the same
message over and over again, and it was compared to "spam, spam, spam" in
the famous Monty Python sketch. The real origins are probably hard to track
back though.

I consider spamming as doing something excessively.

IMO keyword stuffing could fall under spamming, whilst redirecting and
cloaking wouldn't.

what I don't get is the SEO usage of the word spam,
having 10,000 similar pages in Google?
Repeating the same keyword(s) all over the page?

'unsolicited commercial message' concept at all.
You can also regard spam as a misleading message trying to get your
attention (and money).

Some sites want you to register for free, and they already have those "Sign

It's bad for your members, so I wouldn't recommend it.
