If a new site surges up in ranking then suddenly plummets on Google -
landing in the 100's or 500's or even 1000's range - then it is
speculated that the site hit The Sandbox which generally hits newer
sites. What happens then is that the site languishes in the Google
rankings for around 3 months then will move back up in rankings.

If your site has been sandboxed on Google, this won't affect it on
Yahoo or MSN. And many will tell you to continue working on the site
while it is sandboxed on Google - for when the sandbox penalty/filter
is lifted then the work you did on it, during those few weeks, will be
counted/help out for when the site re-enters 'normal ranking
competition'. Some people make use of Adwords while their site is
sandboxed while others may shift their attention, during that time
period, on how the site is faring on the other SE's then, when the
sandbox effect is lifted, shift attention back to ranking well on
Google.

Hope you have not used cloaking, doorway pages or other unethical
method that makes google drop you from their index and ban your site.
Check your log files. If Google's bot isn't visiting your sites there
is a chance that
your sites are banned. Sorry to say this - but it can be true. Hope
this is not true and there is something else to it - maybe like the
Florida Update.

You do realize that Google and other SEs will accept cloaking that is
not done to distort or misrepresent the site/contents to the search
engines? It is the 'unethical' use of cloaking that the SE's frown
upon. This is why it is best to consult with someone who knows their
stuff when it comes to cloaking as you want it done so that you don't
get penalized or banned. As the spiders get better in handling Flash
then there may be less need for cloaking thoughts to be considered.

Hopefully you are not trying to state that a site's 'current problems'
on Google could be due to an update that was over a year back in time?

It was explained alright. I can't say it makes a whole lot of sense to
me to penalize a new site just because it's new, but that's apparently
what they do.

I wouldn't do anything underhanded because it's not worth the risk. The
googlebot is still visiting my site, so I think the "Sandbox" thing must
be it.

Thanks for your detailed explanation. Unfortunately my site didn't just
plummet in the rankings, it disappeared completely. That hardly seems
fair, but I suppose fair has nothing to do with it.
