Ironically, perhaps, this is known as a "google bomb".

"miserable failure" results in the official White House biography of George
W. Bush

Beg to differ. "Miserable failure" is, as you say, a Google bomb, since
the page
that's #1 in the Google SERPs is one, which the site owner did not intend
to
appear for that term.

OTOH "weapons of mass destruction" is *not* a Google bomb, since that page
is
indeed optimised for that particular search term.

I'm not sure on-page optimisation matters at all when creating a google
bomb, if its there, its there, if its not its not.

WMD404 generally is considered a google bomb because its not what a
"searcher" is looking for with that query, and has got there (#1) by
PageRank manipulation, regardles of any secondary SEO activity.

Have a read of this:

Okay, my site, <snip> is usually #1 for 'dance of death'.
Your "dance of death" site is exactly the opposite of what I consider a
google-bomb, as it has relevant, interesting, valuable information directly
relating to the search query.

Quote:
So according to your definition, if an Iron Maiden fan is looking for an
album
named "death of death" - and is not looking for a site about medieval
dances of
death, then my site magically becomes a Google bomb?
Nope, that's just a very bad search query.

Searching for "death of death" and expecting to find "dance of death"
related results is just plain silly, but I'll assume its a Freudian slip on
your part. If a searcher wants to search for a specific album by a specific
band, surely putting the bands name in the query would be an obvious move?

Quote:
So what is the difference then between SEO and Google bombing?
Its difference of specific technique, SEO is on-page, google-bombing is only
through page-links. The only reason the WMD joke is at #1 is because of the
1,300 backinks to it, not because its content is naturally relevant or the
page is particually well structured.

Hi,

As Martin correctly states Miserable Failure is a Google Bomb, but WMD
is not.

For a SERP top be considered a Google Bomb the top listing must not
use the phrase anywhere on the page. This is the case for Miserable
Failure, but not for Weapons Of Mass Destruction.

Though quite funny http://www.coxar.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/ uses the
phrases in the Title and multiple times in the body content so is
partially optimised for the phrase.

BTW I've had a page in the top 20 of Miserable Failure SERP for ages,
I just can't seem to fail enough to get in the top 10 though (cue 2 of
my best friends comments). If my page got to number one it wouldn't be
due to google bombing, but optimisation.

Not necessarily. If I knew the name of a song or Album and you know how
sometimes the group name is on the tip of your tongue but you just don't
know it. Well, then you would do a search like that. There are a lot of
times I know the name of the song and want to know who sings it so I can buy
the CD. I will search for the name of the song to get my info. There are
even times I have searched names of albums, because I have overheard my
children say the name of the album but not the group to see who does it so I
can surprise them with it or something.

Sure, and you'd expect the search results to be messy if you used Google!

Personally I'd probably go straight to Amazon/CD wow <insert your own
favorite online music shop> and search there, its more likely to provide the
specific music/item results (or IMDB for movies)!

Search engines are OK, but not always the best way of finding information.
