I do not think there is a TOPtimum (nice word, can I start using it, too?
;-))I have just re-worked links on one of my sites whereby thousands of
pages were linked through a JavaScript (for tracking purposes - remains of
a 5 years old project), and suddenly over 100,000 pages, all with links
back to the homepage and major sections of the site, became visible to
(and visited by) Google. The site has not been put in a sandbox and is
enjoying a nice burst in traffic.
On the other hand: you can only grow the number of links at the rate
Google crawls your site and discovers new ones. So why should you be
penalized if Google decided to crawl 5,000 pages that night instead of 500
they normally do?
Sincerely,
Dmitri
