I have pages that are optimized each for one keyword. My pages have a
higher PR and a better kw density than most of my competitors' pages but
for some reason it's far away behind in SERPS. The keyword is in the meta
tags keywords and description, the title, the tag h1, alt, links...
Other things I did : the domain is registered for several years and my
pages are html 4.01 strict compliant apart from a target="_blank" on the
ad.
So, what other criteria is google taking into account ?

Links to the site with keywords in the anchor text. Here's how to go
get some

I read your article which was instructive. I already knew about the
importance of quality inbound links and I'm working on that. What
particularly kept my attention was the part about outbound links. Your
advice to link to information sites about my industry makes sense but I
noticed that my biggest competitors don't do that. And I think the debate
about the usefullness of outbounds links has been going on for some time
without any clear answer.

I am with Bill on this one, Google wants to give the best result for a
query, and doesn't care about if a site is "losing" visitors because of
it. So outbound links that are related and good, probably do add weight to
the overal page.

And even if it doesn't, does your visitor like it? If the answer is yes,
do it.

A link might help.

First thing to remember is that the results on google.fr and google.com
will be different. In fact it seems that even the results for two
different users on Google.com may be different depending on how much
profiling information Google has built up on a user through gmail etc.

The first site on both search engines had a bit of content about snoring
which probably scored it well in Google's eyes. Because of this they may
have attracted inbound links with ronflement in the anchor text (bill's
point above).

On Google.com none of the first ten pages was better than PR4. Remember
that PageRanks are approximative, are out of date, and are only a
limited component of the overall ranking.

Your page is 3/10 with your domain at 5/10.
The first page is 4/10
The second page is 3/10 but the domain is 6/10
The third page is 0/10 but there seem to be some canonical/redirect
issues - it has a lot of ibls according to yahoo.
....

So what do you need to do? in no particular order:

First of all your site is commecial, there is not a compelling reason
for Google to show it high in results. You should add unique content to
these eShop/price comparator type sites.

I would focus the title more on your keyword.

Try and move the design aspects to an external css file to improve the
content to presentation ratio. This makes it easier to optimize the
content. I know not everyone agrees that this is important but every
time I see a low ranking site it is invariably a bulky, table driven
design with little content.

Get more inbound links to the page with keyword "ronflement" - either
from external pages or from internal pages (easier).
