Default The new Google algo - 12-06-2003 , 07:36 AM

I've read more about this Florida build. Crazy. The search term I'm interested in previously had
a good selection of relevant sites on its top 10 page. However, now not even the *industry* leader
is there anymore. And some hobby sites have jumped up on the top 10. That's totally irrelevant for
most people. I cannot understand how Google could do such a stupid move. The relevancy has got
worse and that makes Google's fine reputation not as fine anymore.

I've not done much SEO engine optimization other than choosing relevant words and so on, in my text,
and I have page rank 5 and lots of (quality) inbound links, including links from the #1 site. It doesn't
seem to matter. What's happening?

I have a two-word search term, which I have optimized slightly for, but not much more than I make
sure that these words are included a couple of times on the web site. So when I type in those two
words on google.com I end up on position 34 (and sometimes 37).

BUT:

If I type in the same search phrase and add x. For example blue tomatoes x rather than just
blue tomatoes, then I end up on position 3. This is f***ing weird. It seems like Google are
experimenting a lot right now. Unfortunately it has severe consequences for the whole world's
online business. One company, which is world leader is not on the top 10 anymore, replaced
by shitty hobby sites, maintained by people on their spare time.

BUT EVEN WORSE:

If I type the same two keywords followed by xss (I just picked it by random), then only two pages
appear, one hosting cracks and the other hosting serials.

How good is that? I'm pissed of. Google are doing things that are not good for the world's
software business.

Mike,

I see nothing weird with what you are seeing:

Example:
Search for tomatoes: you will find
http://chefsgarden.com/heirloom_tomato_harvest.htm
in position 97 of 3,860,00

Now search for tomatoes herb and it moves up to position 16 of 141,00

Then search for tomatoes herb bought and it moves up to position 1 of 12,000

The x you added moved your page up because there is an x on the page and the
xxs shows only 2 returns because there are only 2 pages that contain xxs

Am I wrong?

No, you're right. I was wrong.

The great mystery with the new calculation of positions remains though.

I'm fairly convinced that sites, which they regard as commercial have been
moved down deliberately. I buy Adwords, so they have my URL in their database.
It's easy to check with the database whether I'm an adwords customer or not,
when they compute the position. Unfortuantely, the keywords I target are not
big volume keywords, maybe a thousand a month or so, so there's not much
I can do.

Of course, they will never reveal that approach for the public. It could make
people angry. But Google have owners who want to see some profit on the
money they invested, so I'm not surprised. They're probably doing this to
boost Adwords sales, using those who have been stupid enough to sign
up with the Adwords program and revealed that they were interested to pay
for a good position. There's only one way out of this, I believe. Move to a new
domain and redesign the web page. That's more or less like beginning from
scratch, but when there's no other way out, then one's forced. Thank you Google.
