Badly named files (underscores) that are not search engine friendly
and not user friendly with mixed case.

Google see - as "space" so keyword1-keyword2 is seen as
"keyword1"
and "keyword2", two words. And keyword1_keyword2 is seen as one keyword
that's "keyword1_keyword2".

Thanks for the quick reply

I realize that domain names are broken at the hyphens into different
keywords. My question is does it mater with files names.

I have just put up my first major site in 4 years. It consists of 600+
files. Nearly all the filenames contain an underscore. The major browsers
are coming round on a regular basis and going down a couple of levels, with
the exception of Google which resolutely just gets robots.txt and index.html
each time.

If there is some problem with filenames which contain underscores then the
sooner I have this confirmed the sooner I will improve Google's ability to
index the site.

Yes it does, hyphenate domains and file names. Check Google Groups for
the evidence (posted several times).

Be careful with existing pages though if they have links you can't
change. The hyphenated files will result in a small boost, no where
near the boost you get from links.

In other words don't change an existing page with underscores just
because hyphens are better. If a page is doing really badly in the
SERPs, then it might be worth changing (nothing to loose).

I have a sneaking feeking you need to show us that robots txt. And
perhaps ask yourself why you have it in the first place. And give us
the url.
