Default My-Yahoo favourites and page ranking - 07-11-2005 , 04:29 AM

Is there any news/rumours to suggest that yahoo are using (or plan to
use) the information available to them in the favourites lists people
can save in "my yahoo" as part of their ranking algorithms? It seems
like a golden source of "what real people think are good sites"
information for them to use.

Not something I'd heard myself. I think it a bit unlikely - Google has
experimented with that sort of data through the Google Toolbar, and I
believe they found it too easily manipulated.

To my mind the strength of Yahoo as a search engine at present is that it
produces very different results to Google, and looks more closely at page
content. That makes it handy for searches where you don't want the
international leader in a vaguely related subject, but specific details of
something more obscure.

Various toolbars and status bars already keep track of what people bookmark
(spyware perhaps). I might as well refer to the massively-growing
del.icio.us. People keep their bookmarks on-line, which provides good
indication of popularity.

Whatever policies Yahoo adopt, it will not affect your behaviour as a Web
developer. Keep your site clean and user-friendly. Bookmark popularity will
follow naturally.
