msn search preview

I'm assuming many of you already know about this, but I first saw a link to
it today:

It's still crap though, only returning 24 of my site's 155 pages, despite
fully crawling my site every few days.

Wow, I'm getting some amazing results on this thing with sites that don't do
well at all elsewhere.
The sites I'm seeing do well have the search term as the domain name with
hyphens, so I wonder if this new MS algorithm is giving more weight to
domain names?

Note that it's only currently indexing 1 billion pages. Still got 3 or 4
billion to go Also, it's early days yet so who knows if/how it will
change.

The links page of opro.org comes up higher than the main page for some
reason... never expected that.

Result 1 was a page from a UK dating service - www.singlesclub.co.uk/*--
not a site about magic or ;ove spells.

Results 4 and 7 were from some sort of spammy link farm or affiliate
directory -- www.lovespellsdirectory.com -- not from a site about magic
or love spells.

Result 5 was nothing but a string of endless keywords. Who would ven
want to click on it to see what it contained?

Results 6 and 8 were both pages from the same site --
www.true-love.org.uk -- a UK dating service, not a site about magic or
love spells.

Results 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, and 15 were all pages from the same site
-- anewlove.org.uk -- a UK dating service, not a site about magic or
love spells. It seems to be a subsidiary of the singlesclub site, which
is listed at No. 1.

Only results 2 and 3 were on-topic sites actually offering free love
spells.

So out of the top 15 results returned in a search for free love spells,
TEN of them were for dating services in the UK! How useless is THAT, i
ask you!

To say the msn search engine is inutterably stupid is an understatement.

Yeah but do the same search in Google and it actually gives you some useful
results that you'd actually want to look at. Sure, the MSN results give you
pages that have the keywords you searched on but the results are
effectively useless. If MSN search returns useless search results then
people won't use it.

One thing I don't like is how it doesn't tell you how many pages match the
search term. OK it's a beta search engine and presumably that's coming, but
being told several million pages matched my criteria is useful for
searching as it means you know you need to refine your search further.

OK, I admit it isn't quite perfect yet

In fact I just noticed that the #1 result only contains the word "free",
which is strange...

The dating agency pages don't appear in Google, but it's rather unfortunate
for the OP that they decided to include "spells" among their keywords.

One thing I don't like is how it doesn't tell you how many pages match the

True. I'd like to see search engines adding reliability indicators to their
results as well. (Didn't they all do that once, or am I just imagining
things?)
