That's just one example. I think that Google's frequently unusual
results leave the door open for someone to do to them what they did to
Yahoo.

I think they did it to AltaVista to be accurate.

Two or three years ago, the big concern seemed to be whether or not a site
would be accepted into Yahoo's directory. It is something that doesn't come
up too often anymore (ever?). I guess that Google really didn't do anything
to Yahoo, it's more like they benefited from Yahoo's mistakes.

All I was trying to say is that the search market is fickle and doesn't seem
to tolerate a search engine that can't or just doesn't deliver relevant
results.

Over the last 6 months, I have encountered many, many unusual results in
Google. I certainly don't see Google as the champion of relevant searches.
Just one example - I have a site that was 43 in a Google serp that is not
all that competitive. It recently moved to 82. To give you an idea about
how competitive that serp is, #6 is a page about a particular type of
insect - completely unrelated to the search.

I have to agree. It wasn't long ago I ahd this cat by the tail but now
I see where I ranked in google in my logs, click on the link to pull
the google results up, and am no where to be found on the page. Even
though I ranked hours earlier.

I rank, then I don't. This happens over and over. Could Google be
doing some sort of randomizing?

Yes. It's part of Google's continuing program to eventually try to
figure out the consequences of having more phds aboard than common
sense.
