Moving to a new domain

I'll move my site to a new domain early next year. And of course I want to
bring the page rank and search engine position with me. Will Google
accept a redirect, created by editing the .htaccess file? And will it then
automatically use the new URL in its index, but still keep the page rank
etc for the site?

Inbound links will probably point at the old address, at least for a while.
Will that cause Google to think I have less inbound links? Or is it smart
and knows that the URL has been redirected and consequently these
inbound links kind of points at the new site?

My web design company under went a name change during the summer so we
registered the new domain name and were planning on fading the old site out.

Within 4 weeks of publishing the new site it had a PR of 5 and was doing
better than the old one. Both are bringing in business so even though
the old domain isn't our name anymore we're keeping both to double the
chances of getting business. It could well benefit you running both or
at least having a 8 week trial run with both to see what's happening.

The other major benefit of course is you can target more key word
phrases. Our main keyword phrases are separated into 3 main searches so
we now have 3 domains each targeting one of the three phrases and it's
helping us no end.
