Default mirror site? - 11-11-2003 , 06:13 PM

What happens when you create a mirror site - regarding SEO and google.com.

What will google do, how does google pass judgement (regarding analysis),
assuming the mirror site was created to bring in new traffic.

Its not a good thing, I know - Im hoping for some feedback from those that
know.

Go ahead google doesn't care in the least. I know of two sites that are
mirrored and are number one and two on page one under their search.

Read the guidelines for webmasters at Google.
http://www.google.com/webmasters/guidelines.html , specifically Item 5 in
the section "Quality Guidelines - Specific recommendations" i.e. "Don't
create multiple pages, subdomains, or domains with substantially duplicate
content."

Google checks for duplicate pages and will usually remove duplicates from
the index. If Google doesn't spot it, your competitors will; they then
report you via http://www.google.com/contact/spamreport.html by ticking the
"Duplicate site or links" box... and then you risk a ban.

By googles own terms and conditions (which I would beleive over Sam) you
can't create duplicate content. I'll admit I've seen websites with duplicate
content, although they'll be banned in time.

I use my free webspace provided by my isp to test pages on
before uploading to my proper site.
Is there any fear that my test pages could be
classed as mirror pages?

If google finds it. Why not create a robots.txt file to stop the google
spider looking?

Or even better, password protect it. That will make sure that even if
Googlebot has a hiccup, the content cannot possibly be indexed, and will
make sure that no-one but you will be able to see any mistakes on the
untested pages.
