OS X is not open-source. From what I understand the BSD license allows you
to take the open source code and close it off, which is what Apple did.

I noticed that in a newer version of Firefox (1.5.0.7 for Mac OS X)
there is an auto popup that comes up with old text that I have written
in text input fields. That's not a very good thing. Suppose I have been
porn surfing or written other things that I don't want other people or
competitors to see; do you think I want that text to pop up? Not
really.

You can fix that in your privacy settings.

But what happens when someone switches the setting back again? When I
installed the new Firefox version, very old texts from the PREVIOUS
version popped up.
When you install a new version of Firefox, it keeps your same profile
folder. Your profile folder contains everything about your settings,
history, extensions, etc.

One solution is to give each person their own user account and their
settings will be stored in different Firefox profile folder. If using
Windows XP, each user should have a different non-admin account that
has "private" settings. That will keep the average user out of other
people's profile folders.

What I would like to have in Firefox is that the popup of old texts in
input fields should be default switched off. And as long as it is
switched off, Firefox should not save a history of the texts entered in
input fields. Third, when the popup function is switched on, then user
input texts can be stored in a history, but that history data should be
able to be cleared by the user in an easy and safe way (this may
already be possible in Firefox today).

Although I have been using ms word for grammar checking, excel for
spreadsheets, and IE to check browser compatability - these are the
only three programs that can actually crash my system (not a
coincidence that they are all inferior microcrap products).
Grammar checking: Strunk & White: Elements of Style.
Spreadsheet: OpenOffice Calc (although Excel is a top-quality product with
no full equivelent yet, the hidden price tag on MS is too high)

Apple isn't much better, with their support of DRM, etc.

Check out Options -> Saved Forms.

Uncheck Save information etc.
And press the Clear Saved Form Data.

However, if you have several users sharing one account, reread the
suggestion by 'z': give each a *limited user* account, which is certainly
a thing I recommend.

If you don't want to do that, you might make short cuts for each user,
each starting firefox with a different profile, see:

I just did 3x eight page documents for brochure printing. I found
about 240 grammatical errors; microcrap word only pointed out 100 of
them (40% isn't too productive).

Apple has new software called iWork that should be able to sink the
last of the bug-ridder crash-test-dummy office productivity software.
The new iWork software contains a program called "Pages" that should
soon be able to replace both microcrap word and excel.

OS X is not open-source. From what I understand the BSD license allows you

When your competition is incompetent, there is no reason to be
secretive. Everything OSX is going open-source.

With its open-source core based on FreeBSD 5.0 and the Mach 3.0
microkernel, Mac OS X is the best Macintosh operating system ever for
UNIX users. With built-in support for Linux, Mac OS X easily runs your
favorite open source software. Mac OS X even automounts Macintosh,
Windows, and UNIX file servers directly in the Finder.

Darwin is the open source UNIX-based foundation of Mac OS X.

Apple has made open source and standards a key part of its strategy and
delivers an operating system built on a powerful UNIX-based foundation
that is innovate and easy to use.

I very highly doubt that OSX is going open-source. Where did you hear that?

I won't argue that it is the best *Macintosh* operating system for UNIX
users (there aren't too many competing Macintosh operating systems). It's
not necessarily the best operating system for UNIX users though.

Sounds like "open source" is a key part of their marketing strategy at
least. If they would open source the whole thing and abandon DRM then I
would belive it.

So does Windows, so does GNU/Linux :-) The other way around is not true,
sadly.

The address history is also important to be able to clear, but what I
was talking about was the "new" function of having previous texts I
have written in input text fields in forms to popup. Does the latest
version of IE have such function?
If not, I am sure programs like Crap Cleaner (of CCleaner for short)
provide ways to clean things up.
