Microsoft to Unveil New Search Engine

Microsoft to Unveil Updated Search Engine 'Live Search' in Latest Move
to Compete With Rivals

A word of caution: this is the third or fourth time I can recall that
Microsoft launches a supposedly 'brand new' engine. The share of Live/MSN
search keeps declining while Google/Yahoo gain.

Recent story:

Windows Live Search Vanishes

A visit to search.live.com only returns a "Service unavailable message,"
and the link to Search Only from Live.com delivers a very
pedestrian-looking search form. Search results look about the same as
those on MSN Search.

Let's no forget the fact that it takes years to build a good index, cache,
domain blacklistd, let alone a loyal userbase. As another word of warning,
boycott IE7 because it sends Microsoft a list of all pages that you visit in
order for them to improve search results. Your privacy is jeopardised and it
goes beyond cookies and search queries. IE7 is forcefed as a security
update, but it can be blocked.

Live Search seems to have the same search engine for web and news
search as MSN Search. The image search on Live Search is different than
on MSN which uses results from Picsearch.

Live.com is almost as broken and crappy as it was the first time I
tried it. It's still completely useless. Amazing how they can fail at
everything they do with their resources.

(Also, I wonder how much they paid and to who for that domain.)

Given that far and away the majority of users will have no care about
nor concept of what's involved, this seems futile.

Any details on how it communicates? Maybe it can be blocked by a
firewall.
The anti-phishing toolbar probes an address, comparing it against a database
at Redmond (or proxy). The URL's are logged to form a complete list, which
essentially establishes complete wiretapping on every Web surfer with IE
(version 7 is a forced upgrade because of the 'Firefox threat'). This could
give Microsoft insight that's on par with having Google Analytics on every
domain, where every user permit scripts (JS) to run.

The implications seem worrisome to me. The Net will no longer be a private
room, nor one which involves just the Webmaster and his/her visitors. Giants
who permit government access become an informational heaven. I bet the
Spooks are licking their fingers over this... *frown*

Best wishes,

Roy

The security conscious won't use it. Knowing that it relays info back
to base, would you use it to view questionable material?

Ha ha ha, so it's FUD again coming from you Roy.

Can you explain how an anti-phishing tool can know when a domain can not
be trusted *without* calling home?

It's simple Roy:

A tool that looks up PageRank, calls home.
A tool that verifies the status of each URL, calls home.
A search engine needs to get the query in order to be able to search.

Men, sometimes I really wonder if you're not better of in one of those
cults.

I think you missed the essence of the message John: "The URL's are
logged to form a complete list". Calling home is one thing. Storing
the requests is another.
