Default Meta Tagging Competitors - 05-01-2006 , 07:44 PM

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it's considered very bad form to list one's
competitors in meta tags, isn't it?

One of our client's competitors has our client's business (and just about
every other competing business) listed in their meta tags in both the
description and the keywords.

It's bad ethics, but worry not. Meta tags will usually have no effect on
search engines. They may be used by other Web services though.

Keywords will have no real effect (if any) on ranks, but there is no reason
in the world why the site should be /described/ by making a mention of its
competition. Contact the site in question and demand that the Webmaster
rectifies this.

With kind regards,

Roy

Have a word with them and with their hosting company and tell them you
want it shifted. Really it's the hosting company you want to seriously
go after because they can just flick a switch and turn the site off on
the basis that it's against their terms and conditions (if it's going
to get them sued then it will be). You will maybe need to show that
you've contacted the owners of the site and you've reasonably asked
them to remove the content and they haven't.
Also you can fill in a spam report at Google, just don't hold your
breath waiting for anything to happen;

Bill copyright issues have nothing to do with a spam report. He can turn
them in to Google via with the other option besides spam under the Digital
Millennium Act.

Yeah, but that wouldn't have helped him. Just wasting some time on his side.

And was easy to find go to webmaster info and click on the link to go to
legal matters which came to the first page I listed. Took all of 1 minute
maybe.

I was looking for trademark infringement. I went to the page above and
searched for trademark. There's nothing in there about it so I
thought, Oh well, and gave him a link to a spam report.
