Default Many small web sites versus larger one - 08-09-2004 , 11:04 AM

Two questions:

1. I have a web site with a general subject, the family, and many
sections under it, for babies, teens, parenting etc. Am I better off
creating many little web sites whose subject matters are more narrowly
focused, for example www.baby.com, www.teen.com, www.parenting.com?

Or is a site like www.family.com, with sections for the above subjects
ok? Or is it immaterial?

(btw the urls above are only to help show subject matter. My question
above is not about the urls. I have made up these urls, btw, they may
or may not be real.)

2. Since I already have a domain name like www.family.com, would
sites and domain names like baby.family.com, teen.family.com,
parenting.family.com with narrowly focused subject matter be better?

Here the question is about organization and naming. Do I do better
with search engines by organizing my subject matter differently, and
does the naming of the sites with the subject name in front of my
domain, ie family.com, help.

In other words I am currently using one web site for the family with
many sections under the general subject of family. I have sections
for babies, teens, parenting, etc.

Thanks for any thoughts.

Best regards,

Al

I'd go for mini-sites myself. Try to get hold of a copy of Michael
Campbell's Revenge of the Mininet and have a browse.

Better isn't necessarily different and vice versa. It depends a lot on
how you handle those cards which you eventually deal yourself. Sorry
to sound opaque but that's how it is.

That last is correct, yes.

I would use overture and google search tool to see if the the terms are
directly related. Some might suggest wordtracker. I use google and overture
because of the coverage.
If so, create pools of similiar terms and optimize for in the same site.
If not, create new sites and link together.
