Default Manipulating Google? - 09-14-2003 , 06:54 PM

With Google now appearing to update weekly, if not daily
is it getting to easy to manipulate the placements?
I put a parody page up the middle of last week, and it is
already appearing as no.1 at Google, admittedly for a rather
uncommon phrase (5,200 results), but surely it shouldn't be this
quick and easy to get a high placing?

Got a link?

If its obscure then yeah of course its great news that you got straight to
the top.
chances are you are the most relevent site relating to that obscure phrase
so its good that you are top.

I added a new page with 50,000 competitors and got it to #2 at the first
time of asking. I feel a little cheeky

Think of it like this. If it's easy for you to have a term rank high,
it's easy for everyone. If it's easy for everyone to rank high, you got
competition. Or do you think everybody shares the number 1 spot? Surely
if the keyword is competitive and people realize its value, you will be
pushed down by other SEO experts -- or just people putting up good
content that becomes popular. So you better prepare and if the search
phrase is valuable to you, put up great content and have people link to
you.

Thanks for the reply,
go to google homepage and type in
Virgins in Essex then click the "I'm Feeling Lucky" button.
Like I said earlier, I only put the page online last week as an
experiment.
I used to think it took 2 or 3 months just to get a placement
The way it appears at the moment, all sorts of crap can appear at the
top of google within days of going online.

I agree with all you say, was just amazed that any page can get to no.1
in less than a week from being online. I always believed it took at least
2 or 3 months just to get picked up.

Well not really. It will only appear at the top if you search of "all sorts
of crap"
Not many people do that

It takes about 1-3 months for a completely new site to get picked up
completely & stable (pages might appear or disappear from the SERPs in
the meantime). You can get a single new page indexed within some days
just by linking to it from another page.

What I have found is that many webmasters don't have a clue about SEO.
Thats why its easy for some pages to go straight to the top.
The SEOs have gotten into the game for highly competitive keywords
like refinance, insurance, sex, hosting, etc. but for the more obscure
words its
an easy shot. But even for the competitve terms you can do things like
buy traffic or tweak your page for misspellings of the key term or
variations of the keywords. You dont always have to compete head on.
Since there are millions of search each day if you can get a small
percentage you are doing good.
