Hi Group

Thanks in advance!

Craig,

Is the site hosted on UK servers? I have a .net site

so it's a dynamic site in aspx?

Wot?

So that's a "no" then?
That was a "wot". This is a "no".

Host it physically in the UK, or use a designated UK ip address.

There is a possibility that your IP address (or block of IP
addresses) is not recorded by Google as being in the UK.
Can anyone post a reason why its more sensible for google
to use IP to determine location instead of domain ?

Google is alone in ignoring the country extension and looking
at the IP instead to determine location.

E.g. Host a .co.uk on a US server, and it will never appear in
the UK searches on google, despite having the country domain
extension.

Google probably gets this info directly from the registry databases,
for example RIPE.
If they get the info the same way they do location sensing to give you your
'local' google, they don't take it from RIPE, or not in any regular manner,
anyway.

I contacted contacted Google and asked them why all users of my UK ISP were
served Google.de as default: it took them months and months to do anything
about it, even though all the IPs were UK registered with RIPE.

I have just found out that it is not possible to change the an IP
addresses registered location. I therefore have two options:

1. Move to a UK registered IP group. I don't really want to do this
because I really like my hosts at the moment!

2. Try and find some other way to make the search engines know the
site is aimed at the UK market. It has UK all over it and in the
titles etc... but still get filtered. I had hoped a simple meta tag
could solve the problem. Can anyone suggest a way other than moving
hosts?

3) register a .co.uk domain name and migrate your search presence from the
..com to the .co.uk. A .co.uk should appear in UK only searches wherever it
is physically located.

4) this one is rumour but may be worth a try. Make sure that your site is
listed in its DMOZ UK category, not just in the main subject directory.

Personally, I would switch hosting to the UK: it's probably the easiest and
most effective fix, and good web hosts aren't all that different really.

This is not true, at least for google, who use the ip to detect the
location.

I ended up moving back to UK based servers for some co.uk domains
where UK only search results were important.

Did you really? Drat, another thing that should work reliably at Google
and doesn't!

There are plenty of UK domains hosted outside this country that do
appear in the UK listings, and I've never before come across one that
didn't work that way - but I am not surprised to hear that it's not a
100% certainty.

For about a year all users of my UK ISP were served Google.de as their
home page, despite whatever routing, domains and the RIPE database said
about their UK location (not to mention contacting Google and telling
them...)

And their Adwords geosensing is definitely a bit odd too.
