Do links in forums, newsgroups,discussion forums, email boards help out?
Not talking about spaming them but for people who like to post?
Would signature links help?

Posts to newsgroups and mailing lists are not indexed, but many newsgroups
and mailing lists are mirrored to the web. The links in the mirrored text
should help just a wee bit.

Because there is no anchor text in these converted links, and because most
mirrors have very low PR, these links will not help you enough to invest
serious time and effort into them.

But, if you just happen to be posting, AND you are saying something
intelligent, someone who reads your post might click your link.
