Default Links - 01-21-2006 , 08:08 PM

Looking at several postings, It appears that links are the only way to fly
if you want your site to be published fast and have good rankings. Couple
of things I am not clear on. I am not sure who puts links where. Is it I
who adds popular links to my site or popular sites add link to my site? If
it is I who add popular links to my site, how do I go about finding them
and/or what should be the criteria? Is there legal issues with adding links
to your site?

Thanks in advance

I'm fairly new to PR also, but this is how I understand it

It's more important to have them link to you. But this can be negative
or positive. Most often the exchange will be mutual, but this also
means that you become affiliated with whom your linking to. So if thet
are in a negative view from google, you may also be deemed likewise. If
a mid to high PR site links to you, it is deemed that they found your
site of interest also... or worthy of the link, which can be helpful.

A very generous person from the boards swpped links with me and I've
already notice the index of the page in 1 days time. It's quite
important to get the inbound links, though the outbound shoud not be
overlooked either.

The object of the linking game, if that is something you feel your web site
should participate in, is to acquire as many relevant, keyphrase textual
links back to your web site while minimizing the amount of links going out
of your web site.

Now how to get the links. The best way to do this, in one word is : Effort.
Many will try to persuade you to take short cuts, but frequently short can
be are hazardous. No, the best way to do this is to visit relevant sites.
Check to see if they offer a link page. Certainly apply for a link there, if
it is free. Those that require reciprocal link backs ( they link to your web
site if you link to theirs ) you must consider them carefully.

Here's my rule of thumb, which is not perfect, but give me good indicators :

Install the Google toolbar. Check what the PageRank value is on that
particular page in which your web site will appear. If the PR value is the
same or better than the one that you will be putting their link on ( your
outbound links page ), then it is worth a reciprocal link. Take note though
: You have to actually check their linking pages web site coding to ensure
that your link on that page is crawl ( that the search engine spider can
navigate through the page to find your link and follow it to your site ).
Otherwise, the appearance of your web site link on that page is pointless
and help you little.

Doesn't always work that way. I mean if you are looking for links means to
me you don't have any and you got a PR of 0. Now it just isn't fair the way
you have it. I mean If I wasn't nice I wouldn't be giving away links at all.
The real thing is if it is a good potential quality related site go ahead
and link to them. There are several people I have helped out with links from
the beginning to get them going because when I started out there were
several nice people doing the same. The power of linking out can help you in
the case of related links. When you look for PR and other things you lose
the real reasoning for links. Links make your site better if you gain the
right type, this is both ways out and in.

Thanks for your help.

Are you saying I could check google page ranking on a particular page by
installing google toolbar? Is there a way to do this without installing
google toolbar? Once google toolbar is installed, how do you get page
ranking?

Thanks again

When you install the google bar, you'll see the page ranking on the
bar.. It says "Page rank" It will have a bar indicator, but you can
also pause over it with you cursor and it will show 3/10, 1/10, 0/10,
8/10 etc... 10 being the best.

I've only seen one site at 10/10 and that was Apple. Though because of
the iPod frenzy it is a VERY hot spot right now.

In regards to Linking and Page Rank - Not sure if it would help, but I
created a personlized Google Search Page. I added high traffic news
site like slashdot, I added weather, I added Top Stories.. and then I
customized the on screen bookmarks. Apple, eBay, FreeBSD, and a few
others - meanwhile I also added a link to my home page

My Google page now has a ranking of 3/10. (not much but its only been
about 2 weeks), so now I added , my products page and my search page
with complete product list. We'll see if Google trusts themselves.

??? Am I missing something? 2 weeks old page can't have PR above 0
reported if there was no PR update in theese 2 weeks - and last
PR update was somewhere in October IIRC.

Hey Borek

Does this mean that the new links we have added over the last few
months may show some results on the next PR update?

If you could elaborate on how the PR updates work, and how frequently,
I would be grateful.

Also, I have already created a post on this site. Why would google not
detect links from relevant sites? We have this link on a PR5 site
http://www.sbhonline.com/PremiumIV.htm and when I do a search on
link:www.premiumiv.com it doesn't show.

Thanks
Jim

Please quote posts you are answering, it makes life of those
willing to help much easier.

From what I have read and seen PR (used internally by G for the search
results) is calculated all the time, but values reported are
updated about quarterly (very roughly and irregularly).
Inbound links counts are updated more often - about once
a month. PR update happens always together with IBL update.
A lot of time passed since last update of PR, so we are
expecting next update anytime now - but we can be all
wrong, as G in unpredictable.
