Default Link request manners - 10-02-2003 , 07:19 PM

Hi all
I have noticed a trend in potential link partners. A lot of people will email
my site with their link info and tell me that they will add my site after their
link is up AND I send them my link info. I thought that if you are asking for a
link, you should have the other site's link up first, then ask for a
recipricle. If someone emails my site for a link, I ask that they have my link
up first. Is this rude?
Thanks

I would rather be asked first, give permission, and THEN see my site
listed on theirs.

It's a quality control thing. What if I don't WANT them to list my
site on theirs? I'd rather stop it before it becomes a reality.

For me, the correct order should be:

1. receive request for a linkswap
2. accept request
3. wait til they put link up
4. Then link back

I agree, the person asking for the exchange should link first. Whether it
is before contacting you or after you agree to exchange doesn't matter.
Putting in the link is pretty easy and taking it out is just as easy. It
just seems to be rude for them to expect you to put their link up first.

I am inclined to look more favourably on sites who link to me first, because
then you can see what form the link will take. Some will ask for reciprocals
then link via javascript, or from a page on a different site, or direct back to
your link page, or with useless link text, etc. And some just plain forget.

It's your site, so you set your own standards and rudeness doesn't really come
into it. Does anyone consider the Yahoo directory to be rude for excluding most
sites?

Thanks for the great input from everyone. Pre-screening potential link
partners makes sense. It just gets me when someone emails you, expects you to
do all the work then tell them when their link is up. I am probably being too
harsh.

I have never given any thought to the different kinds of links that other site
may place. Hmmmm. Some may have no value? I better take a closer look at my
link partners!
Thanks again
Ken

mhhh,
we had a similar discussion in an italian ng, i still think that i can
link who and what i want.
Someone mentioned and american company that asked his link to be
removed from onether web site (kinda of directory).
I don't know how it ended, but it sounds absurd to me.

If you're on the net, if you published your web site why i can't link
to you?!?

If in the real life if u ask me for an address (a real one, a
pharmacy, a pub, whatever), am i gonna be punished for that?

And most webmasters if someone wants to link to them would prefer
they just do it, and not bother them about it.

You should link to a site because it helps visitors of _your_ site in
some way. Not as a Thank-You to another webmaster. Your webmaster is
not the one you make your website for, is it? When I visit a site I
like I find link-exchange-pages pretty obvious and boring. When someone
asks me for a backlink, I check the page, and if it interests me, I
link to it. Not because someone links to me.
