Liberating websites from search engines

Hello,

I came across this superb article by Dr Jakob Nielsen, the guru of
usability, who suggests some radical ideas, ranging from the proven
(newsletters) to the speculative (mobile services).
http://www.useit.com/alertbox/search_engines.html

Thought it would be of interest.

The self-proclaimed guru ;-) His site might be very usable, but is a
horror to read IMNSHO. I wonder what he thinks of that research that in
the first seconds we have formed an opinion on a website, by just looking
:-D.

Agreed, and actually it has been written many times that text should
not go from one side of the screen to the other. This is a very bad
idea for people with reading disabities. (Lines merge into one etc)

One could make the window smaller :-) But.. I am not going to do resize my
window for every site I visit.

What I just don't like about his site is the use of a lot of bold, links,
bold links (!), and marked text. I know that he has found out that 75%
(roughly) of the people scan read, but I think that his conclusion (IIRC)
that this means that pages *should* be written for scan reading is not
always right. Maybe some pages are boring, but his pages are hyper for me.
