Default KFC Chicken Website Tricks - 10-13-2003 , 02:19 PM

Been looking around at certain sites. When I got to viev the source on the
KFC website nothing appears normal? There is no keyword, description or
content? Also there seems to be some hidden phrases? eg.

INPUT TYPE=HIDDEN NAME="screen" VALUE="find">
<INPUT TYPE=HIDDEN NAME="link" VALUE="results">
<INPUT TYPE=HIDDEN NAME="linktype" VALUE="results">
<INPUT TYPE=HIDDEN NAME="smap" VALUE="map">

Anyone know the secret? - No not to the chicken To the number one rank?

I looked... everything seems to be normal to me

There are no "keyword", "description" or "content" because most search
engines don't use them anymore.
Why? Because too many people would just plug in whatever the top search
terms were for that month and watch their site come up in searches for terms
that didn't relate to their site (you still see adult sites doing this all
the time)

The <input type=hidden ...> tags are hidden form tags. These are very
common on the internet and you will find them on almost every site (but not
all) that has online ordering or region specific content.

As for the #1 rank... presumably you mean Google? There are quite a few
reasons they could be #1...
Among them:
Lots of backwards and internal links
They could have paid for the spot
Google has its smart search technology and knows that if somebody is
searching for "Kentucky Fried Chicken" odds are they want to see the
"Kentucky Fried Chicken" website and not a site about something like your
dog and how he likes eating Kentucky Fried Chicken... so they place the most
relevant searches at the top

They have a good unique name KFC fried chicken
They have backlinks to their site using their logo with the alt text= KFC
No tricks - top result, rather as expected.

But note, like others, they can't get more than two pages on the screen, the
lower one folds all the other pages underneath thus: [ More results from
... ]

Best regards, Eric.

Baloney. You can't buy the top spot from Google, but as an SEO I can
get the top spot for almost any search term if someone is willing to pay
a lot for it. And, this isn't because I know any secret Google tricks.
Google rankings depend heavily on links from pages on other sites with
high PageRank, and the anchor text used for these links. Getting #1 thus
is just a matter of buying a sufficently large number of links from
other sites. This may not be cheap for competitive search terms, but
with enough money it can be done.

I can imagine a very rich man putting up a site on a
religious/ideological issue, and deciding it is worth it to pay for the
links it takes to get to #1 on Google for key search terms. My guess is
that this happens so rarely in the world of SEO that it can be ignored.
For commercial sites money is always an object. And, sometimes the
amount of money buying the #1 spot on Google takes is low enough that
they do it.

Concerning being able to buy high page rank links.

I recently began studying some of the backlinks of some competitors
and found that what they are doing is buying advertising on possibly
thousands of pages in a network with high PR.

One of the networks was http://www.infoplease.com/

Look to the bottom and you will see the paid links.
They have 27,000 backlinks and are apparently selling as space which
gives you great PR.

I will eventually check the pricing but suspect it is out of my price
range. What I suspect is that the search engines will eventually be
taken over by the deepest pockets, which is how things have usually
worked.

Tim
