Default Keeping old domain name but updating listings - 07-03-2003 , 12:32 PM

Hello,

I'm consulting for a company that changed their name about two or
three years ago.

Their first domain name was domain1.org. Then they changed it to
domain2.org.

They've gone by domain2.org for a while now, but have kept
domain1.org. Both domains go to the same website. Also, their mail
server here receives mail for both domains - the president can be
reached by alice (AT) domain1 (DOT) org or by alice (AT) domain2 (DOT) org.

The frustration is this: when you google or yahoo the company's name,
the link comes up but it says domain1.org. We tried re-registering
with the search engines a while back, but nothing has changed. I'm
thinking that's because domain1.org still works. We just don’t
want to go by that domain name any more, but we don’t want to
disable it.

Many thanks in advance,

Matthew

What I would do is the simple thing:

Remove the text form all the domain1.org page and put instead a link at the
new domain name.

I just did it for

http://www.lifeinitaly.com/resort/

and it worked fine for Google

Hi Paolo,

The thing is, there is only one website. domain1.org goes to the same site
as domain2.org.

Thank you

PS - nice looking resort.

Well, here's the question - if you type domain1.org in a browser what
url do you see - if it's still domain1.org then that's what a spider
will see as well.

The point is the only solution I see for this problem is to convince
your ISP (or pay them for it) to configure a redirect in their web
server software such that anyone going to:

domain1.org/<blah>

is automatically (and unconditionally) redirected to

domain2.org/<blah>

Unfortunately spiders don't like pages with meta tag redirects so that
option won't work so your stuck with the above as far as I can tell.

The problem IMO will be convincing them to do this for phasing out your
account. Once domain1.org is no longer in search engines then you can
safely have them drop the redirect (but be careful if your pages are
archived anywhere then you'll probably want to keep it indefinately).

If you own your own web server or you have dedicated hosting then this
should be easier to achieve.
