Default help: file structure and naming - 08-11-2006 , 05:49 AM

for example if i was doing a website about mortgages (its the easiest
example i can think of) how should i structure the site to maximise
seo?

option1.

/mortgage.htm
/bad-credit-mortgage.htm
/remortgage.htm

option2.

/mortgage/index.htm (replaces the above mortgage.htm)
/mortgage/bad-credit.htm
/remortgage/ (replaces remortgage.htm)

option3.
/mortgage/mortgage.htm
/mortgage/bad-credit-mortgage.htm
/remortgage/remortgage.htm

Any help would be appreciated in clarifying this.

Always Mark.

option3.
/mortgage/mortgage.htm
/mortgage/bad-credit-mortgage.htm
/remortgage/remortgage.htm
How about /mortgage/ as the top base hierarchy and start from there without
/mortgage/mortgage.htm?

Then /mortgage/bad-credit-mortgage.htm
/mortgage/first-time-buyers.htm
etc. Think of anything that has to do with mortgage that you can get content
for. The more you optimize your navagation with your site the better.

I wouldn't have any evidence to say yes or no. I do have maybe something
that might help:
http://allgiftshop.net/
http://allgiftshop.net/occasion-gifts/
http://allgiftshop.net/special-gifts/

From there I moved with the different sections. If you notice how the PR was
distributed you can see that these pages seemed to be deemed just as
important as the other following the sub pages.

Well, you answered your own question, but i'd like to say that the
degree of preferential "betterness" for the root level structure is more
than "just a little" -- it's amazing the difference that root level
files makes. I speak as one with several domains, ome structured with
multi-tiers and others not. The more tiers, the lower the ranking of the
pages at google.
