Default Google's enjoyment of giving false hits - 01-06-2004 , 08:47 PM

Hi, gang,

I have a question about Google -- and the way they seem to love to give
false hits. It has happened numerous times to me. I will enter in a key
word and click on the results, expecting to find that word even once in the
text. Sometimes, however, I cannot find that word anywhere on the page,
even if I open the source code and read the html code for the Meta Words
that search engines sometimes use to score sites. Frankly, I wonder if
Google is pulling a rabbit out of a hat on some of their choices, if there
is something terribly wrong with their software that causes their computers
to get confused as to where the word really appears or if someone pays them
to put in random web pages that don't belong to a certain search term or
set of terms.

Has anyone ever ran across this problem? If so, is there any workaround
that I can use to stop the many false hits I get? Google is generally very
impressive, however, this problem with false hits is getting to really
annoy me. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks.

That's probably a cloaked page. That site has presented Google different
content from what a browser receives. Check Google's cached copy of the
page.

You can report such tricks on
http://www.google.com/contact/spamreport.html (option "Cloaked page").

Might also try looking at the cache. See if the word is highlighted with
the text "___ found only in links to this page."

G.F.A.,

Why on earth would Google mislead people by giving hits to a page when they
know that the word sought was NOT located on the page in question, but on
another page???

They aren't false hits, if you check the cache it will usually say
something about the word is only found in links pointing to the page.

So it's got the SERP through the anchor text of links pointing to it.
This rarely happens for competitive SERPs.

If it isn't that then the site may be cloaking or redirecting.

????? the cache is the version of the page that Google indexed when it
crawled it. The site may have changed - so that could be one reason
it is still indexed for that word that you can not find (checking the
cache will see if that was the reason)

Also anchor text of incoming links is very powerful for ranking well -
did you check any of the backlinks to see if the 'missing" words is in
the anchor text of incoming links???

This is the whole "miserable failure" problem. IMO they shouldn't be putting
sites without those words in the text of the page above those that do contain
the text, but that seems to be happening more often since Florida. This makes
Googlebombing possible once more, and it's down to giving a slightly higher
rating to anchor text.

Given the fuss in the press over "miserable failure", I can't see this
situation lasting too long.

Yeah, Google better get the phrase "search engine" on their homepage if
they wanna rank well for that!
