Default Google Update? Screwy SERPs - 03-24-2005 , 04:01 AM

(in mid panic), I'm seeing a huge amount of screw-i-ness going on with
Google's results,
in as far as the subjects of my site(s) are concerned over the past day.

ANYONE ELSE see the same?
Could it be that there's a major update coming along?

I ask since it's been a very very VERY long time since I last such a
disruption occur with my site(s) search results on Google.

Times like that it's best to go to the pub till they're over. No
amount of obsessing will make any difference.

I was in the same situation a month ago and the guys here calmed me down.
Don't worry, Google becomes sane at the end.

What is it that's stealing your ranks? Also, what is the nature of the
SERP/s?

I suspect that you will have to say more or mention the SERP and your site
so that we can "see the same".

There was a major update around the 7th to the 17th from what I could
gather. This seems to be a once-a-month thing.

Has there been any downtime? Any errors?

Yah, I've always seen the same in years past. It's just that it's been so
long. And well, it was a shock to witness this crash after soaring so high
over the past 6 weeks. For February & March I'd broken my own records.
Now, Kaplash and Kaplut with crappy pages overtaking me. (poetry aye?)

ACK!

Thanks for the perspective bud.

Too bad I gave up drinking and smoking. Oye! That must be it! Too much time
with me hands (literally). ;-)

Yes, we've been seeing some very odd behaviour too. Not across the
board but on some sites we've seen results for their main search terms
varying from page 1 to page 3 all in the same day. One site showed a
13th place one day and then approx 260 the next. Sure makes reporting
difficult!

Other sites that were making steady progress have suddenly reversed
and we're seeing some sites appearing at the top of those rankings
that either have no reason to be there or are heavily spammy. Even our
clients are telling us they think Google is loopy. Yet other searches
are perfectly stable.

Hope it stabilises soon

Bill, you don't notice anything strange at the same time with MSN?

I've found that my rankings there have improved hugely in comparison to
where they were before this LOOP-I-Ness with Google began.

Regardless, I agree, 'hope this stabilises soon.

Here's the relevant posting I finally saw crop up at WebmasterWorld:

http://www.webmasterworld.com/forum30/28722.htm

finally I see that others are witnessing the same sort of strangeness.

MSN has been strange for a while - don't think it's really settled
down since they took their new system out of beta a few weeks ago.

Yesterday was rather more unstable though - I found that on some
searches I was being bounced around between different page layouts
even when just going to the next page of results. One layout had large
text and only a "next page" link - no list of numbered pages. One had
a tickbox for uk only and one didn't. Weird.

My general impression was just that they were gradually increasing
their indexing and tweaking their results. But some of the results
have been a bit erratic to say the least.

Re your other message, yes, we were surprised that no-one seemed to be
talking about it. Maybe it was just "Google-change fatigue" but it is
odd that some people are seeing such major changes while others aren't
really seeing anything different.

Never thought I'd see the day that Yahoo was the stable and sensible
one!!

cheers
