Google sitemaps - verification impossible on some sites?

It doesn't matter what I do even with their new meta tag verification
scheme, I can't get two of my sites verified by Google. Anyone else
having problems? Have a peek at www.kruse.co.uk - is that not a meta
verification tag I see before me? Not according to the Googs, it
simply isn't there.

I've been wondering if the whole google sitemap thing is worth the
trouble. Gotta set up an *account* to use it? WTF does that benefit?

Does google look at google-format sitemaps if you don't have the
account and the meta-tag?

Free account, but you have to set it up. In my experience sitemap speeds
up indexing of freshly added pages and helps spider whole site. YMMV

No idea about meta tags - perhaps I am missing something. Up to now it was
working like - you used your account to tell Google where your site map
resides. Without it G doesn't know where your sitemap is so it can't use
it. Note that sitemap has well defined internal format, but can be in any
place of your site and can have any name.

Not in my Sitemaps - I have checked before asking. For every sitemap I
have three tabs - Diagnostic, Statistics, Sitemaps. Only place where
verification is mentioned is list of the sitemaps - perhaps as all my
sitemaps are verified OK I don't see something?

I had my site verified by having a special page for the Googlebot to visit.
Never heard of the meta.
