Default Google sitemaps problems now - 08-07-2006 , 07:19 AM

Mine aren't verified now, some of them, so I have to go through the
verification process again. What is wrong with these idiots? What this
means is that everyone will be trying to re-verify at the same time so
the system will grind to a halt again. Gawd - if you had a choice, you
wouldn't bother with Google, would you?

Just trying to let you know so that there may be a reason to why this is
happening. Like when was the verification(how long ago), when was the last
time you downloaded manually the site-map etc.

In my case three different sitemaps for three different domains were
verified many months ago (in 2005) and Google was using them even in July.
I have just checked logs and they were fetched last time on July 18th,
19th and 31st respectively. None fetched in Agust yet and Google doesn't
list them as if they were never submitted.

What was happening earlier, from the posters site I was getting a
message that it won't verify because my 404 page returns a 302 error.
I can't seem to find my 404 page on that one so maybe I deleted it
somehow.
From kruse.co.uk I got the unverified error, it said that my 404
returned 200 OK which I seem to recall stops the site from verifying
so I deleted it and tried again just now. It now says the 404 page,
which isn't there anymore, gives a 302 and refuses to verify. Oh, it's
quite happy that the sitemap there is mine though and says it's ok. It
seems like the whole kit and kaboodle has gone screwy again just like
it always does when Google try to introduce any damn thing.

May be G problem, but may be screwed up server configuration as well. Try
some header checker (like http://web-sniffer.net/) to see what kruse.co.uk
really sends out.

A good thought, but it won't be two of them on separate hosts going
wrong in the same few days.

I had a choice. I looked into google sitemaps. I learned that the
first thing I had to do was to create an account. I dislike things
that require me to create an account. I made a choice. I set things
up to automatically generate a standard html sitemap based on whatever
product info my database happens to contain and the usual navigation
stuff. I found that having a sitemap made keyword searches find my
site much more easily regardless of what robot was crawling or what
search engine was searching. People fret over page ranking but unless
you're just trying to indiscriminately draw traffic for ad revenue,
what you really want is good keyword search results for people who are
looking to buy your type of product. If I ever decide to create an
account and become yet another google vassal, the code will be easy
enough to modify into the xml format necessary for a google shitemap.
