Google Sitemaps

I've read a few posts here about some negative effects of Googe
sitemaps and some about the neutral and some positive. I've been using
them and updating them pretty regularly.

Recently I had a search term come up pretty regularly and found that I
was number 9, on a pretty comment term. Now I find that the page isn't
even indexed. Do you think this would be because of sitemaps? Other
pages are still indexed, but not as many as a few weeks ago. Any other
explanations as to why this would happen?

I doubt sitemaps have anything to do. Look for other factors - one link
from prominent page can make a huge difference in SERPS, especially if the
keyword is not very competitive one.

Isn't indexed or isn't in the top ten or twenty or so? Makes a
difference, you know.

Bill why do you always state "we"? You can't include everyone as you don't
know what they know. You should say "I" don't know instead of we most of the
time. And even if most of the group did not know still you don't need to
speak for them.
