Default Google Site Down for Last Hour or More? - 10-12-2005 , 03:44 AM

Haven't been able to get to any of Google's sites since about an hour and a
half ago. Anyone have any idea of what is going on? Have they been hacked
or is this just some major update?

Works here, although additional 40 minutes have passed.

Yes, it is back up for me, too, and I noticed that they now have a new
feature, allowing local geographical search for specific things like
restaurants and hotels. My guess is that was it.

I am not sure that would be an explanation for the downtime. Are you sure
that feature was never available before? Google are very serious about
their uptime. They even have engineers whose job is to ensure stability and
resilience.

Since you write from earthlink.net, I also assume that you come from a
fairly modern and primary country in the sense that Google's presence there
is crucial.

I noticed that feature about 2 weeks ago when I was searching for a
movie, and my local theater (northern Minnesota, USA) show times popped
up... I investigated, and noticed that there were quite a few features I
hadn't seen before. However, I can say that was definitely there when I
looked.

Well, I am at a loss, then. Either they screwed up, or they got hacked, or
it was a planned downtime for maintenance (which, I agree, seems almost
unthinkable for Google, but we don't know what they're doing that might
require such drastic action, do we? And it did occur late at night, which
tends to indicate planning rather than their site getting owned by
saboteurs, who probably would have chosen a more damaging time.).

Well, enough speculation. They're back, and whatever it was is now over.
