Default Google search results being redirected to advertiser pages. - 09-16-2006 , 03:45 PM

Recently, like yesterday my IE6 browser started to be redirected when
clicking on the search results from a google search.
You can see that after clicking on the google link returned from the search
that you begin to go to the correct page, but then the redirection happens
and you can see a new address appear on the bottom of the browser and you
are redirected to a site that is mostly advertisements for something related
to my search.
Been seeing quite a few pages with advertizer show up as being the source.
The redirects do not happen if I use ask.com, or the search function from
yahoo.
Anyone have any thoughts on this.

Yes. Don't use IE. Or at least put some defense between your IE and the
outside world.

Sorry I can't be of more help, but I am not joking. Similar situations
were described here in the past - IIRC IE can be tricked into such
behavior. Hopefully someone will remember more details about what to do.

Best,
Borek

Your browser might have been hijacked. Download the usual garbage removing
tools, and run them. Next learn why it's unwise to work with Administrator
rights all the time, it might help.

This sounds like it /could/ be a case malware. There were incidents last year
when users were redirected to a fake Google or always received pr0nographic
sites in search results. The sites were owned by some German network, IIRC,
which cashed in on AdSense.

Oh, hasn't read that before replying to the bit at the top, so the disgnosis
appears to intersect. It might also be worth upgrading the Web browser by
switching to something less permissive and exposed. Opera seems like a good
candidate.

Best wishes,

Roy

My A doesn't work. Solution: use B. *sigh*

My experience is that it works much better by helping out people fixing A,
and let *them* decide if they want to switch to B by themselves. People
can make decisions, really.

Thank you for the replies.
I have already run the spybot search and destroy, Trojan hunter, Ad aware,
and none of them find anything, even after downloaded to the lastest
definitions.
What I find odd, is that searches performed from the Yahoo search engine do
not give the same problems as exhibited by the Google searches.
I read an online blog, where google results were hijacked, and people were
sent to different locations when clicking on the search result links.
Anyone hear about something like that.

Your browser's been hijacked, I think. Try hijackthis at

you might not be able to open the page. If you can't, try getting
Firefox from somewhere and then download it with that.

I proposed closed-source so that you would not complain. Besides, it is a
fair recommendation, which I assume you would support as well. And various
scans could not remove what seems to me like 'poisoning' of IE.

Best wishes,

Roy

PS - Thanks for the support in that other thread. I hope you eliminate that
kook, but be warned that he has been abusing UseNet for about 10 years. They
say it's Gary Steward who lives in the Hamptons.

anything, even when using the latest definitions. I find it odd that it is
only links from Google search reslults that give a redirection, and it is
not constant, IE some pages go to the expected page, while only some go to a
redirected page. The redirected page is usually another search result page
with a list of links for items similar to my original search on Google. The
one common element I see, is a logo for ADVERTIZER somewhere on the page
that I was redirected too. I tried searching the registry for that word, and
no entries were found.
