Google requests random URLs

From one of my sites' logs

66.249.72.110 - - [17/Dec/2006:23:14:00 -0600] "GET /czudwxrt.html HTTP/1.1" 404 307 "-" "Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; Googlebot/2.1; +http://www.google.com/bot.html)"

I did a big search and not one page of that site refers to
"czudwxrt.html" anywhere. Doubtful that it is a bad external link
either.

Yup. Seen it. The Googlebot tried to crawl a couple of hundred .ASP
pages on one of my sites - it's never had a .ASP page on it. Several
people have reported the same. Don't bother looking for the inbound
links - they're not there. It's a Googlebug.

I thought that it was a 404 test (ie to verify that nonexistent pages
produce a 404 error), but maybe it is just a bug.

Perhaps a way to check your 404-page. Has this been broken ? Google may
check to get a probable 404 result
Had few cms sites that had the 404 broken, then saw google request
non-existing site.

No, that's a predictable filename. This was dozens of utter rubbish
URIs within a few minutes.
